How to Declutter and Organize your Home

How-to Tuesday!

With all the extra time spent at home lately, many are feeling the pull to declutter and organize. If you are one of those people, read below for some tips!

The designs on Livable House Plans are perfect for those that want an organized, clutter-free home!

Our plans offer only the most functional of spaces, minimizing clutter-prone areas and maximizing storage areas.

Check out this house plan: "Brittsan" - This home features many storage closets situated throughout, a large walk-in pantry, storage area in the garage, and a huge laundry room with cabinetry.

The best course of action when attempting to declutter your home is to create a solid plan. This will help you stay on-task when the decluttering seems overwhelming. Your plan needs to have one solid rule: pick a room and stick to that one room. If you skip from room to room, you may just end up with a completely disheveled house and that is overwhelming. Make a simple plan of the order in which you would like to organize your home.

Tip: Start with a room that you would like to relax in – this may be your living room, den, or bedroom. It will be helpful to have a space to come back to and relax in during this process.

Next, create a simple sorting system. Gather boxes or trash bags that can hold the following three categories: Trash/Recycle, Donate, Organize (this box will contain all of the items you would like to keep – be sparing! Remember that you are trying to declutter). You may also need a “Store” box for things that need to be placed in storage.

Tip: Make sure to label your bins/bags! You don’t want to accidentally throw away or donate a box of your “keeps”

Here are some helpful things to keep in mind when deciding what to get rid of:

  • Think of the last time you used the item. Apart from seasonal clothing items, if you have not used something in the last six months, you should probably donate, sell, or throw it away.

  • Get over the money that has been invested. Often, we keep things that we do not use because of the money that was originally spent. While it’s never pleasant to waste money on unnecessary items, it may be even more unpleasant to keep the item around.

  • If you are feeling guilty about the amount of stuff you are throwing away, remember that you have options when it comes to getting rid of your things! If you are worried about the money you spent on things, consider holding a garage sale or selling things online. When the sale is over, donate the remaining items. If you are worried about throwing things away, reconsider the option of donation – something that may seem like trash to you could be exactly what someone is looking for!
